ภูมิใจในตัวเองจังที่ทำผัดไทยแล้วกินได้ (คนอื่นอาจภูมิใจที่ทำแล้วอร่อย แต่เราขอแค่กินได้ก็พอ

เหมือนจะเป็นคนมักน้อย อิๆ)

เราซื้อถั่วงอก กะหล่ำปลี เต้าหู้ เครื่องปรุงผัดไทยตราแม่ศรี และเส้นก๋วยเตี๋ยวติดป้าย Product of Thailand มาใส่ตู้เย็นไว้เมื่ออาทิตย์ก่อน รีๆรอๆว่าเมื่อไหร่จะทำกินดี

จนได้ฤกษ์ทำเมื่อเริ่มหมดมุขกับเมนูสารพัดไข่ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นไข่ต้ม ผัดผักกับไข่ สลัดไข่ ผัดปลากระป๋อง

ผัดมาม่า เบคอนทอด

 ตอนอยู่ ไทยถนัดก็แต่กินของที่ที่บ้านทำให้ มีหน้าที่กินให้เยอะๆ แล้วก็ล้างจาน ชีวิตที่นี่ทำให้ต้องกลายเป็นแม่ครัวจำเป็น เพราะอาหารฝรั่งๆกินนานๆก็เลี่ยน เวลาเพื่อนคนอื่นกินแฮมฯหรือซุป เราก็จะหนักไปทางกินสลัดแทน

ก่อนทำเราอ่านวิธีทำหลายรอบมาก อ่านเช้า อ่านเย็น อ่านก่อนนอน (เอ่อ..ยังกะจะออกสอบ ฮ่าๆ

วิธีการทำก็มีสั้นๆแค่นั้น แปะอยู่บนขวดเครื่องปรุง และซองเส้นก๋วยเตี๋ยว เป็นภาษาไทยและอังกฤษ)

เราทำเสร็จหาผู้เคราะห์ร้ายมาลองชิมไม่ได้เลยแฮะ รูมเมทไปเรียนกันตั้งแต่เช้า (เอ๊ะ หรือมีเจตนาหนีการชิมผัดไทยของเรา)  จนเมื่อน้องวันเพื่อนคนลาวกลับมาจากซื้อของตอนเที่ยง

เลยอุ่นและเอาไปให้ลองชิม วันบอกว่าผัดไทยรสชาติดี เย้!

 วันโชว์ฝีมือการทำกับข้าวลาวให้เราดู 2 อย่างแล้ว คือแหนมขาว ซึ่งดูแล้วทำง่ายมาก ลวกกุ้ง

แล้วก็เอามาวางลงบนแผ่นปอเปี๊ยะ ใส่ผัก เช่นกะหล่ำปลี แครอท แตงกวา ลงไป ม้วนๆแล้วก็ราดด้วย

น้ำจิ้มไก่แม่ประนอม หรือน้ำสลัดก็ได้ ง่ายจัง ไว้จะกลับไปทำให้ยายกินที่บ้าน

อีกเมนูที่วันโชว์คือปอเปี๊ยะ(บ้านเราเรียกแบบนี้ แต่วันเรียกยอจื่น) คราวนี้เอาเนื้อหมูคลุกผงปรุงรส

 (เช่นรสดี) ผัดให้สุก แล้วเอาวุ้นเส้น ผักต่างๆลงไปผัดร่วมกันในกะทะ เอามาผึ่งน้ำมัน แล้วก็ม้วนๆกิน

ทำไมอาหารต่างๆหากมีเวลามานั่งดู มันดูง่ายจังเลย กลับไปเราอาจจะเป็นคนรักการทำอาหาร

และมีเมนูไว้อวดใครต่อใครแน่ๆเลย (น่าน... เริ่มฝันหวาน กะเป็นแม่ครัวหัวป่า)

แค่ใส่ใจและมีเวลาให้มันเราก็จะเป็นแม่ครัวที่ดีได้แน่นอน ( เท้าสะเอว ทำหน้าตามุ่งมั่น)

อาหารที่นี่รวมทั้งไอติมมักมาในปริมาณเยอะ เมื่อวันก่อนสั่งไอติมโคน เห็นคนก่อนหน้าได้ไอติมขนาดใหญ่ สองก้อนยักษ์โปะลงบนโคน โอ้วว ใครจะกินหมดเนี่ย เราบอกน้องคนขายว่าขอก้อนเดียวพอ

 เค้าไม่ฟังเลยอ่ะ เราไม่ได้จะจ่ายตังศ์ครึ่งราคาสักหน่อย เพียงแต่ถ้าปริมาณมาก

กินไม่หมดแล้วเสียดายของ

ไดอาน่าเพื่อนโปแลนด์บอกว่าเพิ่งเคยเห็นคนอ้วนมากๆที่อเมริกา อ้วนแบบว่าร่างกายดูไม่สมดุลย์

ขาต้องรับน้ำหนักท่อนบนเยอะมาก ไม่ดีต่อสุขภาพเลย

เวลาซื้อของตามห้างก็เหมือนกัน นมแต่ละขวด ไม่มีขวดเล็ก เป็นน้องๆแกลลอนกันทั้งนั้น

โฮสแฟมิลี่บอกว่าเพราะคนอเมริกากินเยอะ และไม่ชอปปิ้งกันบ่อยๆเลยซื้อในปริมาณมาก

ของที่ขายมักจะสำหรับคนทั้งครอบครัว พอเราจะซื้ออะไรเลยต้องซื้อขนาดยักษ์ไปด้วย

ทั้งที่ในครอบครัว(ที่นี่)มีอยู่คนเดียว อืม หรือว่าต้องหาครอบครัวซะแล้ว อิๆ

ว่าแต่เรื่องนี้ทำยากกว่าทำอาหารเยอะเลยแฮะ

Shopping classes & used book policy in Penn State Univ.

I like the tradition of shopping for classes in American Universities. Wow! that means there're a lot of classes per a semester for students to choose. This week students are allowed to sit in a class they're interested in and then next week if they find that they're still interested in the courses, they can accredit those courses. Unlike many Thai universities, students frequently complain that they'd like to study some courses, but they're not available. Moreover, some elective courses aren't the true one as there're not many choices for them to select, so they've to study in the elective courses that they're not much interested in. This's also due to the shortage of teachers in a campus.

Today's the second day of the Fall Semester. I was keen to study since it's my first class so I arrived at the class 15 mins. earlier to find later that the class wasn't available anymore. See! Even in USA, the info. from the univ. website's not updated. Van & I saw the course offering in Higher Edu. just a few days ago. The officer told us that the info. didn't show on the college of Edu. anymore, but it might be in the registrar's office website.

So, I'd plenty of time before the evening class of Globalization & Lifelong Learning started at 6-9 pm. Van & I went to the HUB Center to have lunch there. It's very very crowded. Perhaps because the no. of students totally were 43000 so  it's impossible to avoid long lines. 

Even at the bookstore where I looked for used / rental / new textbooks for the Friday class of Higher Edu. in USA. It took quite some time to wait for a long line.
In Thailand, senior students will pass their used books to junior students or big brothers pass books to younger ones. Oh! I nearly forget that there's a policy for students to borrow books from school and return at the end of the term.

Similary, Penn State students can rent books from bookstores and  prices are much cheaper than buying a new one ( Haha...that's for sure).  My eyes were widely opened knowing that I'd get a cheaper price so I told the cashier that I'd like to rent these books which I got from the list of the prof.

Unfortunatetly, I didn't have a credit card for book rental so I'd to buy them new. Textbooks in USA are very expensive.  Totally, I paid 3,360 B. for both used & new 5 books. I planned to sell it after the end of the courses as the bookstores have a policy of buying used books and sell to students for the next semester. However, the price for selling back was cheap. I did this once when I was in UC Davis, selling the new textbook "Beyond Language" and got $5 back.

However, it's better than getting nothing. With $5, I can buy 1 meal and learn how Americans utilize the policy of helping students to get cheaper price book.

Garage Sale in USA

Yesterday we Humphrey Fellows had a team-building program in order to get to know each other better at the Tussey Mountain. ( It's somewhat a hill but considered mountain here :-).
In the afternoon, it rained heavily so we couldn't climb a mountain. The back-up plan was shopping for used items at the garage sale which I found was a great place to get a cheapest stuff. My adrenalin strongly got aleart. The Global Connection Organization has organized this event to get a fund for its org.

Items were varied. Umm...let say if one was looking for refurnishing his/her house or need anything for a kitchen, living room he/she'd get them all.

Mostly, each item cost $1. I'd like to buy all,but in a few minutes realizing that my bedroom's very small. Not many space to store all things that I wanted.

I ended up paying $23.50 for 16 books, 2 notebooks, 1 TV and radio alarm clock.  In Walmart Store, by this amount of money, I'd get just 1 jacket. ( However, Walmart's a good choice for shoppers as there're a lot of Walmart throughout the country).

At the last minute, I decided to buy the 14 - inch TV that cost $5. Surprisingly cheap! Normally, when I was in Thailand, I rarely watched TV, but here I thought perhaps I could practice listening skill and watch news to update what's going on around the globe.

The funny thing was I didn't know that the TV system here needed a TV cable cord. I saw it on the floor at the garage sale, but thought it didn't belong to the TV. 

Arriving the apt., I tried to plug the socket to set up it, but it didn't work so I came downstair to the Weston Community Center which's the office for helping residents. Ms. Robin, the office manager told me that I needed to have the cable cord which's amazingly cost about $20, much more expensive than the TV I bought.

Oh My God!

Tik Tok Tik Tok... My brain had to think veryt quickly. Then I came up with the idea of calling the elder lady whom I know at the garage sale and told her my problem. Luckily, as she's the host family of my Indian friend, Khati, she's so kind that she'd pass it to Khati when she met her in the evening.

Unfortunately, she misunderstood that I'd like to get a new TV because the TV I got didn't work. So, she brought the new used TV from the garage sales to Khati.

Ok... my TV's now settled down in my bedroom. Just wait for the partner, cable cord, to meet her this evening ( Saturday 20 Aug.11) and then they'd  happily live together ever after.

Transportation in PSU, University Park Campus

วันนี้ได้เขียนเป็นภาษาไทยแล้ว หลังจากทุลักทุเลกับการเปิดคอมฯเครื่องเก่าที่เอามาจากไทย แต่เป็นเวอร์ชั่นเก่า เลยไม่สะดวกกับการใช้ microsoft word 2010 ที่อเมริกา
คอมฯเครื่องใหม่ไม่มีแป้นภาษาไทย ร่ำๆว่าจะฝากเพื่อนจากเมืองไทยซื้อตัวอักษรไทยมาแปะบนแป้นพิมพ์ หรือไม่ก็ print แป้นพิมพ์มาดูตัวอักษร หรือเปิดคอมฯเครื่องเก่าเพื่อดูแป้นพิมพ์ไทย

คิดไว้หลายวิธีมาก
อืม...เราพยายามรื้อฟื้นความรู้เก่าตอนเรียนพิมพ์ระบบสัมผัสเมื่อมัธยมปลายมาใช้ ฝึก
พิมพ์ด้วยการเขียนตอบ Facebook จนตอนนี้คล่องแล้ว
 จะว่าไปไม่ต้องมีแป้นไทยก็พิมพ์ได้นี่นา (เริ่มฮึกเหิม หลังจากพิมพ์คล่อง อิๆ)

มาอยู่ที่ Penn State U. เข้าอาทิตย์ที่สอง ก็ยังมีเรื่องให้เรียนรู้อยู่ตลอดเวลา ตอนนี้เราขึ้นรถเมล์ในมหาลัยเกือบคล่องแล้ว เมื่อเสาร์ก่อน เช็คเวลารถเพื่อไปหอสมุด Pattee Library ว่าออกเวลา 1.25 pm. & 1.48 pm. รอจนแน่ใจว่ามันไม่มา เลยตัดสินใจเดินซะเลย (เพื่อไปห้องสมุดเรามีแรงจูงใจที่ดีเสมอ) ซึ่งก็ไม่ไกล ดูนู่นดูนี่อย่างไม่เร่งรีบก็ถึง ประมาณ 10 นาที

รถเมล์ตรง เวลามาก วันจันทร์เราลองใหม่ คราวนี้ต้องไปให้ถึงตึกเรียนเวลา 10.00 น. เช็คแล้วว่ามันออกเวลา 9.40 น. ตรงเวลามาก 9.35 น ก็มาถึงและออกจากป้าย Red Link ใกล้ๆที่พักเราตอน 9.40 น. เป๊ะ
วันนี้ตอนเย็นเห็นป้ายรถเมล์ สายกลับหอพัก เลยขี้เกียจเดินโดยพลัน นั่งรอที่ป้ายกับเพื่อนอีก 2 คน อ้าว...คนขับหันมามอง แต่ไม่จอดแฮะ งง...เราทำอะไรผิดพลาดไปเนี่ย
ฮึ ไม่ง้อ เดินก็ได้

ไว้ พรุ่งนี้ค่อยหาคำตอบว่าทำไมมันไม่จอด หรืออาจจะเป็นเพราะมันต้องจอดตามเวลา ตอนที่เรารอถึงจะใช่สายที่จะขึ้น แต่ยังไม่ใช่เวลาเลยไม่จอดหว่า

หลัง จากชินกับการปั่นจักรยานบนพื้นราบอย่างแคลิฟอร์เนียและผู้คนที่ปั่นจักรยาน กันทั่วมหาลัย ที่นี่การใช้จักรยานไม่ได้เยอะมาก หาที่จอดยากกว่าที่ UC Davis เรากะจะหาจักรยานมือสองมาปั่น แต่เมื่อเห็นเส้นทางที่เป็นเนิน แอบหวั่นไหวเล็กน้อย อิๆ ตูจะปั่นไหวมั๊ยเนี่ย ระยะการปั่นที่นี่ก็ปั่นได้แค่อีกประมาณ 3 เดือน พออากาศหนาว หิมะตก ก็ปั่นไม่ได้อีก ( สรุปว่าจะคุ้มกับการซื้อจักรยานมั๊ยเนี่ย)
เรา เข้าใจแล้วว่าทำไมอเมริกาถึงได้ปล่อยก๊าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์มากติดอันดับโลก เพราะคนที่นี่หากไม่มีรถยนต์ก็เหมือนไม่มีขา เนื่องจากแต่ละจุดไกลกันมาก และบ้านแต่ละหลังก็ไกลกับที่ทำงาน การซื้อรถมาใช้เลยเป็นเรื่องธรรมดา ราคารถก็ไม่ได้แพงมากอย่างประเทศอื่นๆเมื่อเทียบกับค่าเงินดอลล่าร์
รถบางคันยาวมาก ไม่กะทัดรัดเหมือนรถเมืองไทยซึ่งเราว่าดูปราดเปรียวกว่า สไตล์การใช้รถของแต่ละประเทศคงแตกต่างกันไปตามรสนิยม
