Book Challenge:  How to kill COVID-19 Boredom

TSU officially closed from 7-30 April 2020 due to Coronavirus or as known as COVID-19 which has spread out worldwide, no matter poor or rich countries. Every country is equal these days.  I am surprised that USA surpassed China and Italy and currently has the highest no. of death in the world.  How come, this civilized and highly developed country has encountered this and still hopelessly struggled.

3 days ago, 8 Apr. 2020, while working and reading from home, I initiated the Book Challenge (again) to encourage outstanding students to write and share the book they’re reading recently or the books they finished and want to recommend to friends.  I plan to post theirs on our FB: TSUWESTERN to keep the page posted as lately I don’t have anything to post.  By so doing, I secretly hope that other students who read the post may think about reading as a tool to kill time. 

Reading, to me, is my best friend whom I won’t get bored ever.

Reading is a drug to cure my boredom.

Reading is money.  You read and you may get some ideas, expand them and make some money at the end.

Reading is home.  You feel at home when you read. Everywhere can be your home sweet home while reading. You’d feel your own space and immense in your world of imagination.

Reading is so sexy: Book challenge (COVID-19 pandemic frm March - Apr.2020)

Sputnik Sweetheart, by the writer Haruki Murakami.

 I bought a ticket to Turkey for 70 days, unfortunately, my flight was cancelled. Good that I have books. So, hopefully they can solace my weird free time. I just finished with one of Haruki Murakami's novel, Sputnik Sweetheart. 

When I was doing my internship at Gerakbudaya Bookshop in Penang. Everyone knew this Japanese novelist, and once we held a Jazz concert called Listening to the Wind Sing: Murakami and Jazz. There are several book of his collection. I hope to read all of them. When I read Sputnik Sweetheart, I could imagine the feelings of the atmosphere that the writer narrated the story and its mystery. The novel was packed with literary allusions, including the classic music. I could feel like I was there, though I was stuck in Songkhla. 

Someone told me that big brains are sexy. It might be the reason why I like reading so much hahaha.

Today , Aj. Diyaporn Wisamitanan challenged me to share my book that I read.

 In this quarantine time I have plenty of  time to do more productive activities. And, of course, I have found interesting books to read in my free time. I’m interested in this ebook “The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter”and I read on my Ipad. 

The Tale of Peter Rabbit is picture books . It’s a short story because there are only 30 pages. In detail of this book is the same as Peter Rabbit the movie in the first scene if you watched it. The book presents a rabbit’s family which has got 5 rabbits (rabbit’s mother and her children ) One of them is Peter who is naughty and venturesome. One day , he went into Mr.Gregor’garden where his mother warn him that it was a forbidden place for rabbits and then he picked up vegetables to eat. 

As a consequence, Mr.Gregor chased him. Peter escaped. Finally, he ran out of the garden and came back to the rabbit hole safely. This is a funny story that I’d love to read as it used simple words and not too complicated to understand. If you want to begin to read but can’t find the book yet, I strongly recommend this book. You will practice reading skill surely.

พักใจไปกับหนังสือช่วง COVID 19: Crazy Rich Asians

เย้! เราอ่าน Crazy Rich Asians จบไปแล้วเมื่อคืน 4/4/63 อ่าน(จน)จบได้ เหตุนึงก็การที่ต้องอยู่บ้าน เพราะ COVID 19 และอีกอย่างคือ ห้องสมุดขยายเวลาคืนหนังสือจาก 27/3/63 เป็น มิย.63 ! ให้เวลาเพิ่มอีกตั้งเกือบ 3 เดือน

นิยายเล่มหนา Crazy Rich Asians เลยจบได้ด้วยประการฉะนี้แล
อ่านจบแล้ว เราก็อยากหา China Rich Girlfriend ( โดยผู้เขียน Kevin Kwan) มาอ่านต่อ

มันเป็นความรู้สึกคล้ายๆกับตอนอ่าน Shopaholic เมื่อหลายๆปีก่อน ที่พออ่านเล่มแรก ก็ไฟติด ติดตามอ่านแทบทุกเล่มของ Sophie Kinsella (ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Confession of A Shopaholic / Shopaholic Ties the Knot / Shopaholics with baby )  เราอ่านของนักเขียนคนนี้แทบทุกเล่ม แม้จะไม่ใช่ sequel ของ Shopaholic ก็ตาม

เรื่อง Shopaholic  ถือเป็นการลงทุนซื้อนิยายภาษาอังกฤษแพงๆติดต่อกันของเรา เพราะเราคิดว่าแพงก็อ่านจนคุ้ม (อิๆ คำว่าคุ้ม คืออ่านจบ ในขณะที่บางเล่มซื้อมือสองมาตั้งไว้ ก็ตั้งค้าง shelf อยู่นั่น (มีความเสียดายเงิน ปาดเหงื่อ ติ๋งๆ)

นอกเรื่องๆ วันนี้เราจะเขียนถึง Crazy Rich Asians ตังหาก
เราได้ฟื้นคำศัพท์และวัฒนธรรมสิงคโปร์ มาเลย์ ที่รู้ (และลืมไปบ้างแล้ว)จากเรื่องนี้ เวลาอ่านเรื่องที่เรารู้ background ทำให้ขำมาก และชอบผู้เขียนมากขึ้นที่หยิบยกลักษณะนิสัยของคนสิงคโปร์มาจิกกัด
ไม่ว่าจะเป็น

- hawker culture* และการชอบพูดถึงสะเต๊ะ (satay) ที่สิงคโปร์แผงลอยถูกจัดระเบียบมานานแล้ว จะหาขายตามข้างทางไม่ได้เลย (แต่ก็มียกเว้นคือ รถขายไอติมนะ ที่ยังพอเห็นอยู่)  ร้านขายอาหาร street food ที่นั่น ขายเป็นหลักแหล่ง มักอยู่ติดกับ HDB  (ตึกที่พักที่รัฐบาลสิงคโปร์จัดให้) ซึ่งทำให้สะดวกกับผู้ซื้อ และแม้แต่คนรวยๆก็ยังชอบไปกินที่ hawker center

*รัฐบาลสิงคโปร์ในปี 2018 วางแผนส่ง hawker culture เข้าเป็น World Heritage ประเภท intangible heritage (วัฒนธรรมประเภทจำต้องไม่ได้ เช่นการฝึก falcon ในตะวันออกกลาง / การดำน้ำของผญ.สูงอายุจับสัตว์ทะเลที่เกาะเชจู เกาหลี / การตกแต่ง ginger bread crafting ของโครเอเชีย เลยนะ

- การ(อดที่จะ)ดูถูกคนจีนด้วยกัน the mainlanders หมายถึงคนจีนจากจีนแผ่นดินใหญ่ ( และแล้วหลังจากที่ชาวจีนแผ่นดินใหญ่ถูกกล่าวถึงอยู่บ่อยๆในหนังสือเล่มนี้ มันก็กลายเป็นเรื่องใหม่ China Rich Girlfriend ซะเลย 55)

- bargaining การทำเป็นไม่สนใจของเมื่อต้องต่อราคา แล้วแกล้งออกจากร้าน ให้เจ้าของร้านวิ่งตาม (พร้อมราคาที่ลดลง)
