I just got back from Japan for the University Study Tour entitled " Volunteer Work Promotion" which aims to learn and share good practices from Japan institutes. It's amazing how each volunteer center worked.
I'll maximize what I've learned there, comparing with Thai volunteer work and probably American's as it's also very fascinating.
In USA, I learned to be an active volunteer without seeing much of how administration to support the volunteer system worked, on the other hand, in Japan, I saw what staff worked behind the scenes.

ประสบการณ์ที่ญี่ปุ่น ทำให้เห็นถึงความตั้งใจของคนญี่ปุ่นในการทำงานทุกด้าน และมีแผนงาน เป้าหมายชัดเจน มุ่งหน้าสู่ความเป็นเลิศ ระบบระเบียบสุดยอด
ส่วนอเมริกา นิสิต active มาก กิจกรรมอาสาฯที่ Penn State U. มีให้เลือกและทำทั้งปี ตามความสามารถและสนใจของนิสิต แถมระบบการสนับสนุนให้นิสิตทำงานผ่านเว็บฯก็ทำให้ได้อาสาสมัครมาร่วมลงชื่อ ทำงานมากมาย สิ่งที่เห็นชัดของที่นี่คือไม่ใช่แค่นิสิตที่เป็นอาสาฯแต่อาจารย์ พนักงาน ล้วนทำงานอาสากันทั้งนั้น เป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีทำให้งานอาสาเป็นสิ่งที่ทำได้ทุกวัน เหมือนเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิต
ในประเทศไทย งานอาสาฯ ยังทำกันเฉพาะกลุ่ม และบางครั้งคนไม่ทำจะมองงานอาสาฯเป็นงานที่สร้างภาพ (?) จริงๆแล้วงานอาสาฯเป็นงานที่ขัดเกลาจิตใจและสร้างมิตรภาพ สร้างสังคมที่ดี ที่น่าอยู่ร่วมกัน
"อยากได้สังคมน่าอยู่ ต้องร่วมใจอาสา"

even I said I'm semi-retired, I've been working almost every day and am trying not to do much on weekends ka.

That's good for you to have a break on weekends or else you might still be like a full time worker:). Please let me know when you will be in Songkhla / Hatyai. I'm thrilled to meet you again. Not sure if you still remember Ms. Marlane Gulden from America who's 50 something. I've known her 12 years ago and we've been friends till now as she's lived in Songkhla for nearly 10 years. She might want to meet you too. She's the woman who did a mock interview for me before I took the interview for the Humphrey Scholarship and the first one who told me you're very nice director. At that time, I still wasn't sure what she told me till I met you and interact with you . Next month, from 6-9, I'll visit Chiang Mai and 10th I'll be a zoo volunteer. Apart from that I'm free. ( The uni. will start on 12 Jan.).

I don't recall who Khun Marlane is ka...would be good to reconnect na ka. We should have some mock interview sessions for your kids too....really useful and could be inspiring as well.

I've tried to work hard these days because I'm planing to study doctorate degree by next year. ( Don't know the month exactly) I'm turning 40 and want to do this part very soon. However, I've a commitment with the dean of the Fac. of Humanities that I'd help him establish the volunteer bank and run the program in the first year. I love doing this new duty,but at the same time, feel like I've not completed my other commitment of doing PhD. . A bit confused between doing my beloved job and doing PhD.

I have not started a PhD. yet. I want to study PhD in New Zealand as the cost of living there's cheap comparing to USA. However, the topic for proposed dissertation should be something in English field, not community service / volunteerism as I'm in the western lang. dept. (Many people think I've worked for Soc. Sci. or Community Development .
