10. Experiencing washable cloth sanitary pad (Apr.-May). It's amazing. Since then, I won't use normal sanitary pad anymore, if possible.

Online class 2nd time: with the Christian family

Today was my second time of teaching online English class via WEBex. I was excited as I had class from 9-11 am., but I still couldn't share file ( Unlock textbook). Fortunately, N'Keng was in her office, so I asked for her help.  She's a new gen who is good at technology.

Such a relief, this time I could share listening / audio file so students could hear the audio file of the cleverness of a chimpanzee called Panzee.

We've studied Unit 1 with the theme of 'Animal' esp. animal right and animal cruetly.  I invited Jeremy and Christina to be my class guest speakers. Happily, they accepted my invitation even it's a short notice. ( I sent msg to them in the morning around 8 am. and my class was starting at 9 am.)

Students in my S116 group includes students from Community Development and Thai majors. They are shy to speak Eng., but I assigned them beforehand that they got to write the questions they want to ask this family in chat box and I would select the questions I like.  Later, I picked 10 questions from students and from 10-10.20 am. I let them ask questions.  Initially, I told them that I'd call some students to translate their replies, but later I came up with the idea that Christina could do that so that students will see how good their Thai language are.

At the end of the class, students were supposed to leave their feedback of what they have learned this morning. They could write about animals and what they have learned from the American family.  Most students have given positive feedback that they get inspired to practice Eng. more. They'd keep practicing Eng.

The Little Prince & I ( Book recommendation)

'The Little Prince' is one of the books I always highly recommend students to read. I've just checked from Google and found that it's been translated into 250 languages!

I took an opportunity to introduce 'The Little Prince' to Ed. Eng. major freshmen of 1 term / 2020.

Assignment 2: Your favorite book (Deadline: Tues. 7 July 2020)

Direction:

1. Post 1 picture of you holding a book. ( It should be your favorite book if possible). Give reasons why you love that book or anything you want to share with friends.
2. Bring 1-2 books from home to our class. We'll have 'Book Discussion Program' in class. ( You are supposed to be able to share with friends in front of class the reason you bring those books to class. At the end of book discussion, students are supposed to exchange books with classmates for a few week.)

A book is a kind of drugs, to me. I've spend at least 1 hour a day to read books. I exercise to make me physically active, but books are more important than that. They always keep me mentally active. During COVID-19 pandemic, I mostly have stayed at home; however, I don't get bored as I've plenty of books on my bookshelves waiting for me to read. They feel lonely and wonder when I will pick them up.

There are some books that I read repeatedly. One of them is 'The Little Prince'. I strongly recommend that all Eng. majors should read this book. Then, you'll surely fall in love with the Little Prince. The famous quote from this book is ' The most beautiful thing in the world can't be seen or touched,they are felt with your heart'. I planned to use this book as our outside reading book in our class, but since it's been translated into 250 languages! How amazing!

I am pleased to inform you that we had already compiled an exclusive ebook “Stories of Fulbrighter’s Impact” gathering impressive accounts from you and other 12 Fulbrighters to celebrate the 70^th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program in Thailand. The ebook will be officially launched on our website (www.fulbrightthai.org) and Facebook (Fulbright Thailand TUSEF) on July 1, the date of our establishment kha.

Thx for your email.  Hope all Fulbright staff are doing well and stay safe during COVID-19.  After getting your email, I realized that I haven't replied to thank u for the Hanuman charm yet. I'm staying safe and healthy in Songkhla.  I think this has been my COVID-19 protection! My good news was last week I got quite the same award that I was awarded from HHH. Fellowship 8 years ago. ( I I shared this award story in 'Stories of Fulbrighter's Impact already).  From the pic., there are 3 teachers from my dept. who were awarded outstanding teachers. 1) Teaching  2) Research 3) Public Service and Student Development.  I got the 3rd category.  (My dept. has 22 lecturers and this year it's the first year that outstanding teachers are highly recognized in 3 fields. I'm glad that I can request what I want so I asked to get soil for the garden behind my dept.  Now I've my own rooftop garden on the 4th fl. behind the main office:)

I am also delighted that this year Ms.Fatin Hulu was awarded the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program.  After returning from the USA 8 years ago, I have produced 3 Eng. major students who passed this scholarship. 

I'll keep updated with Fulbright's website & FB page.

Congratulations to you and your department kha. You deserve the award and all the credit. Thanks also for sharing your blog na kha. Lot's of energy still! 

(Wish I can absorb your energy...online!) 

I'm glad you are doing well. This year, we have to send all the U.S. grantees back in April. Some of Thai grantees also have to depart from the U.S. earlier than planned. Very chaotic kha. At TUSEF, we take turns going to the office. Despite all the challenges and difficulties, I think this is the period for learning in many aspects. I'm sure you have many things to discuss with your students kha.

And I'm so impressed with your achievement in producing a Fulbrighter every 3 years! You are truly a Fulbright seed kha. Congratulations and thank you!

Winnie-the-Pooh: น้ำผึ้ง(หยดเดียว)กับพูห์และผองเพื่อน

When 2 is better than one

ตลอดทั้งเรื่อง จะมีคำพูดทำนองนี้โผล่มาเนืองๆ

เราได้หนังสือภาษาอังกฤษมือสองเรื่อง Winnie- the- Pooh มาจากร้านหนังสือมือสองเจ้าประจำ ที่หาดใหญ่ ช่วงต้องอยู่ติดบ้าน ( มีค.-,มิย.63) แต่มีความอยากได้หนังสือเพิ่ม เลยขอให้น้องเอ๋ เจ้าของร้าน เปิดร้าน เพื่อเราและฟาร์นี่จะได้ไปเลือกหนังสือมาอ่าน 

รู้จักหมีพูห์มาก็นาน และก็เรียกตัวเองว่าเป็นสิงห์นักอ่านมาก็น๊าน นาน อายจังที่เพิ่งอ่านเรื่องนี้จริงจัง แถมยังเป็นอีกเรื่องที่อยากร้องดัง ๆ

“ทำไมเพิ่งมาอ่าน!”  (เมื่อวัย 45 ปี) น่าจะอ่านมานานแล้วไหม อิๆ แต่จะว่าไป ก็มีหลายเรื่องที่เรารู้สึกว่าอ่านช้าไป รู้งี้น่าจะอ่านมานานแล้ว (Life of Pi ก็ด้วย ซึ่งจนป่านนี้ก็ยังอ่านไม่จบ 55 แต่หนังน่ะจบไปนานแล้ว)

หมีพูห์วินนี่ มีเพื่อนหลายตัวที่เป็นเพื่อนสนิทและก็คอยช่วยเหลือกัน ไม่ว่าจะเป็น (trusted) Christopher Robing, เจ้าหมูน้อย (timid) piglet เจ้าลาขี้กังวัล (Melancholy) Eeyore
นกฮูก (Owl ) และกระต่าย (Rabbit) ซึ่งแปลกที่สองตัวหลังไม่มี

หมีพูห์เรียกตัวเองว่าเป็น FOP (Friend of Piglet), R.C. (Rabbit’s Companion), P.D. (Pole Discoverer), E.C and T.F. Eayore’s Comforter & Tail Finder)  ทั้งๆที่เรียกตัวเองแบบนี้ แต่ผู้เขียนเรียกพูห์ว่า bumbling* Pooh ซะงั้น

หนังสือเยาวชนที่เสนอแง่มุมมิตรภาพที่เราเห็นนอกจากเรื่องนี้ ก็จะมี แมงมุมเพื่อนรัก Babe ก็น่าจะด้วย (เรายังไม่ได้อ่านหนังสือเรื่อง Babe แต่เคยดูหนังเมื่อสมัยเรียนมหาลัยเมื่อ 20 ปีก่อน)

น้ำผึ้ง(หยดเดียว)กับพูห์

แต่ละตอนในหนังสือ หมีพูห์จะมีพฤติกรรมเปิ่นๆ ขำๆ จากความชอบกิน Honey ของตน (หมีพูห์ยังเขียนข้างขวดน้ำผึ้งของตนว่า Hunny เอาไว้ด้วย คนอื่นจะได้รู้(ซะบ้าง)ว่านี่ของๆใคร 55

พูดถึงเรื่องน้ำผึ้ง พูห์ถึงขนาดพยายามจะเข้าใกล้รังผึ้งเพื่อบุกถ้ำเสือ เอ๊ย รังผึ้ง ด้วยการคลุกดินให้มอมแมม และใช้ลูกโป่งสีฟ้าดึงตัวเองขึ้นไป พูห์คิดเอาว่าผึ้งจะได้คิดว่าลูกโป่งคือส่วนหนึ่งของท้องฟ้า (แบบนี้ก็ได้เหรอ) และผึ้งจะไม่สังเกตเห็นหมีดำๆ ที่อยู่ด้านหลังลูกโป่ง

เมื่อพูห์เห็นว่าแผนนี้ท่าจะไม่สำเร็จ และตนเองเมื่อยแล้ว เลยให้เพื่อนรักคริสต์โตเฟอร์ ยิงลูกโป่ง ตนจะได้ลงมาได้ ผลก็คือพูห์อยู่ในอาการยกมือไปเกือบ 1 สัปดาห์เพราะจับลูกโป่งนาน 55 (วิธีเล่าเรื่องของผู้เขียน ทำให้ผู้อ่านในวัย 45 ยังอดขำในพฤติกรรมพูห์ไม่ได้ ไม่สงสัยเลยว่าทำไมใครๆก็รักความไร้เดียงสาของพูห์

น้ำผึ้ง(กับดัก) จับพูห์

พูห์กับ Piglet วางแผนกันล่า Heffalump พูห์ผู้แสนฉลาด(?) คิดว่าถ้าใช้ขวดโหลใส่น้ำผึ้ง ( A jar of honey) ของตนวางไว้ก้นหลุม (ที่แรงงาน Piglet เป็นคนขุด) ก็จะทำให้จับสัตว์ประหลาดได้ อืม…พูห์ช่างฉลาดล้ำ

โอ๊ะ ตกดึก พูห์หิว ทำไงดี ไม่มีอะไรให้กิน

ปิ๊ง!! พูห์คิดขึ้นได้ว่าตนเอาขวดใส่น้ำผึ้งวางไว้ก้นหลุม อย่างไม่ต้องคิด พูห์เลย(ตก)ลงหลุมซะเอง และเลียน้ำผึ้งจนหมดขวดโหล เลีย เลีย เลีย จนหมด แต่….พูห์เอาหัวออกจากขวดโหลไม่ได้ Oh, No…

ที่เหลือ ปล่อยให้คนยังไม่ได้อ่านจินตนาการกันต่อ อิๆ

Grandma Moses คือใคร เราไม่เคยรู้จัก แต่ประโยคนี้กระตุกต่อมอยากรู้เรามาก เลยไปตามดูใน Youtube แล้วก็ได้รู้ชีวิต Amazing ของผู้หญิงชราที่เริ่มหัดวาดรูปวัย 78 ซึ่งสาเหตุที่เธอได้หัดวาดรูป(เอง) ก็เพราะเธอไม่สามารถใช้เข็มปักผ้า ( embroidery ) ได้ เนื่องจากป่วยและอาจจะเพราะแก่แล้ว ทำให้จับเข็มไม่สะดวกแล้ว เมื่อน้องสาวแนะนำให้เธอวาดรูปแทน เพราะการจับพู่กันไม่ได้ยากเท่าการจับเข็ม เธอก็ทำตาม กิจกรรมวาดภาพทำให้ชีวิตเธอ keep busy และเราว่าน่าจะทำให้เธออายุยืนไปอีก 23 ปี (ตอนแก่แล้วเราอยากเป็นแบบนั้น คือ ยังมีอะไรให้ชีวิตยุ่งๆ ทำโน่นทำนี่ ไม่เฉา)

Teacher's Award: What I have accomplished

8 years later...I've awarded quite the same meaningful award.

รางวัลเล็กๆ เติมกำลังใจให้คนทำงาน

8 ปีที่แล้ว เคยได้รับรางวัล The Public Service Award จาก IIE, USA จากการไปแลกเปลี่ยนทุน Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship เป็นรางวัลที่ให้คนที่ทำงานอาสาในชุมชนรอบๆ มหาลัย Pennsylvania State Uni., PA และงานอาสาที่ทำมี impact กับชุมชน ครั้งนั้นปลื้มใจมากก...เพราะเพื่อนที่รับทุนโครงการนี้มีกันร่วม 290 คนมาจาก 90 ประเทศ ทำให้จำกันไม่ได้ว่าแต่ละคนมาจากชาติไหน Thailand ประเทศเล็กไม่ค่อยมีคนทายถูก เมื่อรับรางวัลพร้อมเงินสด 15000 B. ทุกคนจำเราได้แต่เรียกชื่อเราไม่ได้ เลยเรียก Ms. Thailand (เข้าทาง;)

ปีนี้สาขาวิชาภาษาตะวันตกให้รางวัล 3 ประเภท พี่ทวีศักดิ์ ได้รางวัลดีเด่นด้านการสอน / น้องปุ๊กได้ด้านวิจัย / ส่วนเราได้ด้านจิตอาสาและพัฒนานิสิต

นับนิ้วงานจิตอาสานอกมหาลัย ที่เรามักชักชวนนิสิตมาเป็นทีม มีไปเล่านิทานหมู่บ้านเด็กโสสะ และบ้านเด็กสงขลา / ช่วยงาน South Fest Thailand ดูแลศิลปินนานาชาติและนำนิสิตไปเป็นจิตอาสาช่วยงาน / ล่ามแปลให้หมอพยาบาลอเมริกันที่มาช่วยงานคริสตจักร / ล่ามแปลให้ศิลปินที่มาวาดฝาผนังกำแพงรพ.จิตเวช / อาสาสมัครต้อนรับชาวต่างชาติที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ / ดูแลนิสิตแลกเปลี่ยน / ออกค่ายพัฒนาโรงเรียน / แปลจดหมายเด็กๆ สลัมคลองเตย ของมูลนิธิประทีบ อี๊งทรงธรรม ทางอีเมล / ขายยาดมสมุนไพรช่วยหมาข้างถนน / พัฒนาวัด ขัดพระปรางค์ / เป็นอาจารย์ที่ปรึกษาชมรม English Club & ชมรมศีลธรรมนำชีวิต
