มีหลายเรื่องมากมายที่ไม่เคยรู้ เมื่อรู้แล้วก็อู้หู ว้าว ไอเดียเริ่ด น่าจดจำหรือเก็บไว้ว่าเคยมีการทำแบบนี้ด้วย

1. มหาวิทยาลัยกับการแข่งขันทางการศึกษา
ในยุคที่ไทยเริ่มมีคนเข้าสู่ระดับอุดมศึกษาน้อยลง อัตราการเกิดของเด็กลดน้อย สังคมไทยเข้าสู่ aging society แม้แต่ตัวเราเองที่อายุ 44 ปี มันก็คือวัยกลางคนแล้วนะ !!! ผ่าน 40 ปี มา 5 ปี แล้วก็ยังตกใจว่าทำไมเวลาผ่านไปเร็วจัง

หลายๆมหาลัยเข้าสู่การแข่งขันเพื่อให้อัตราการเข้าเรียนของนิสิตปี 1 แต่ละปีเป็นไปตามเป้า
- ม.ธรรมศาสตร์ มีโปรแกรม Thammasat Frontier  School เรียนก่อนเลือกวิชาเอกทีหลัง เมื่อ 8 ปีที่แล้วตอนที่เราไปสัมภาษณ์เจ้าหน้าที่ด้านการศึกษาใน Penn State U., PA เราประหลาดใจเมื่อได้รู้ว่าที่มหาลัยแห่งนี้นิสิตสามารถเข้ามาเรียนโดยยังไม่มีวิชาเอกได้ (แบบนี้ก็มีด้วยเหรอ ไม่คุ้นเคยแฮะ สำหรับคนไทยอย่างเราที่จบม.6ก็เลือกเลยว่าจะเข้าวิชาเอกอะไร ที่ PSU จนท.บอกว่านิสิตจะได้เลือกวิชาเอกตอนปี 2 เพื่อจะได้รู้ความชอบแล้วว่าอยากเรียนหรือไม่อยากเรียนอะไร จะได้ไม่เข้ามาแล้วต้องซิ่ว

เมื่อมาได้ยินไอเดียของมธ. ใน 8 ปีต่อมา ( 2563) ก็ get idea และแม้มันเป็นเรื่องใหม่ของไทย แต่มันเก่ามาจากที่อื่น ซึ่งจริงๆจะว่าไปมหาลัยไทยก็น่าจะหยิบมาทำนานแล้ว แต่ยังไม่มีม.ไหนทำ (เอ่อ...เริ่มเห็นความเชื่องช้าของระบบการศึกษา) อิๆ รวมทั้งมหาลัยเราเองด้วย

ในที่สุดเมื่อมันมาถึงไทยสักที ก็ยินดีกับนิสิตที่จะมีทางเลือก และไม่ต้องมาเสียเวลาเปลี่ยนย้ายคณะ / มหาลัยกันทีหลัง เพราะเรียนไม่ได้ ไม่ชอบ (ซึ่งเรื่องนี้มีทุกปีที่นิสิตจะมาขอย้ายวิชาเอก หรือลาออกเพราะรู้ว่ายังไม่ใช่อย่างใจต้องการ)
- ม.หาดใหญ่ มีการให้นร. ม.6 มา sit in ในคลาส เพื่อดูบรรยากาศการเรียนการสอน และมีรุ่นพี่ จนท.คอยอธิบายเรื่องหลักสูตร
 เนื่องจากที่นี่อยู่นอกตัวเมืองหาดใหญ่ไปหน่อย เค้ามีรถรับ-ส่งคนที่มาทำธุระหรือมาติดต่อเรื่องเรียนกลับไปยังใจกลางเมืองด้วยนะ เป็นเรื่องเล็กๆที่น่ารักและทำให้ไม่เสียลูกค้าดี
- WIL (Work-Intergrated Learing) มอ.หาดใหญ่ โปรแกรมอุตสากรรมการบิน 2+2 เรียนในมหาลัย 2 ปี เรียนในสถานประกอบการ (บริษัทลูกของการบินไทย) เป็นความร่วมมือกับสถานประกอบการ คิดถึงการทำงานในอนาคตของนศ.มากขึ้น เพราะมักมีเสียงบอกว่ามหาลัยผลิตคนยังไม่ได้อย่างใจสถานประกอบการ เค้ายังต้องเสียเวลามาฝึกนศ.อีก หลักสูตรเหล่านี้ก็จะตอบโจทย์ของสถานประกอบการมากขึ้น เหมือนกับที่ 7-11 สร้างรร.ปัญญาภิวัฒน์ / Disney Land สร้าง Disney University
ม.เหล่านี้ เรียกว่าเป็น Corporate University เพื่อมุ่งเน้นให้บัณฑิตพร้อมใช้งานหลังเรียนจบ

NEW ZEALAND  (ความรู้ดีๆจากทีมอาสา NZ โดยการนำของคุณน้อย ชมรมคริสเตียนนานาชาติ) 
- เมือง Wellington ถือเป็น film location ที่มีชื่อเสียงของ NZ คนที่นั่นเรียกเมืองนี้ด้วยชื่อเล่นว่า Wellingwood เลียนแบบ Hollywood
- Coffee capital ที่นี่วัฒนธรรมกาแฟ strong มาก Starbuck ร้านกาแฟที่มีสาขาอยู่ทั่วโลก ไม่สามารถเข้าถึงที่นี่ได้ เพราะคนที่นี่รักในกาแฟของเค้าเอง (เรานึกถึงบางเมืองของไทยที่ไม่เอา Tesco Lotus เพราะเกรงจะทำให้ระบบการค้าของชำของท้องถิ่นหายไป ไม่แน่ใจว่าใช่ที่แม่ฮ่องสอนหรือเปล่า)
- นายกรัฐมนตรีหญิง อายุแค่ 40 ปีนิดๆเอง ดู active มาก
- มหาวิทยาลัย Victoria University ผลิตนักวิทยาศาสตร์ Nobel Prize มาหลายคนแล้ว
- แผนที่ประเทศแบ่งเป็นเกาะด้านเหนือ + ใต้ ด้านบนเค้ามองว่าเหมือนรูปปลา ด้านล่างมองเป็น canoe
- Haka เป็นการแสดงของชนเผ่าพื้นเมืองเมารี แลบลิ้นปลิ้นตา ทำเสียงดัง เอาไว้ข่มขวัญศัตรู

Fulbright ให้อะไรกับฉัน

ฉันเป็น fulbrighter จากทุน Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship ประจำปี 2011-2012  นับเวลาร่วม 8 ปี ที่ฉันระลึกอยู่เสมอว่าฉันเป็นชาวฟุลไบรท์ ฉันเรียนหลักสูตร Higher Education Administration จากมหาวิทยาลัย Pennsylvania State University ที่นั่นฉันได้เรียนรู้และได้รับประสบการณ์มากมาย โดยเฉพาะด้านการทำงานอาสาสมัครที่คนที่นั่นทำกันสม่ำเสมอ ทำกันในชีวิตประจำวัน ทำเป็นเรื่องปกติธรรมดาของการช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน
ฉันรู้สึกประหลาดใจและนึกเทียบกับบ้านเมืองของฉัน ที่หลายครั้งการทำงานอาสาสมัคร ดูเป็น event เป็นครั้งๆไป ตอนอยู่ที่นั่นฉันพยายามเข้าร่วมงานอาสาสมัครแทบทุกประเภทที่ฉันสนใจและคิดว่าฉันน่าจะได้นำมาประยุกต์ใช้ที่ชุมชนของฉัน ไม่ว่าจะเป็น การเยี่ยมเยียนและดูแลผู้สูงวัย เด็กออทิสติก การรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อมในมหาวิทยาลัย การเป็นวิทยากรเล่าเรื่องราวประเทศไทย การเป็นอาสาสมัครในพิพิธภัณฑ์วิทยาศาสตร์สำหรับเด็กในมหาวิทยาลัย เป็น food runner ในงานกีฬา จัดแยกเสื้อผ้ามือสองเพื่อหาทุนเพื่อการกุศล ฯ

ฉันทำอะไรบ้างในช่วง 8 ปีที่ผ่านมา

เมื่อฉันกลับมาจากสหรัฐอเมริกา ฉันเป็น pioneer ฉันริเริ่มทำสิ่งต่างๆที่ฉันอยากเห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงในมหาวิทยาลัยของฉัน ฉันอยากให้นิสิตที่ฉันสอนมีจิตสาธารณะ แต่ละเดือนฉันมีโครงการงานจิตอาสามากมายเพื่อให้นิสิตได้เลือกตามความสนใจ เช่น การเป็นอาสาสมัครสอนการบ้าน อ่านนิทาน กับน้อง ๆ สถานสงเคราะห์เด็ก การเก็บขยะชายหาด (Trash Hero Songkhla) ซึ่งฉันเข้าร่วมและชักชวนนิสิตกลุ่มใหญ่ ไปเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกิจกรรมเก็บขยะรายเดือน ณ หาดสมิหลา สงขลา

ฉันชอบเห็นนิสิตใช้ทักษะความสามารถของตนในการช่วยเหลือผู้อื่น  นิสิตมักถูกฉันชักจูง ชักนำ ให้ไปเป็นอาสาสมัครร่วมกัน พวกเราทำงานอาสาสมัครเป็นครูสอนน้อง เป็นล่ามให้กับศิลปินนานาชาติที่มาวาดกำแพง ตัวอาคารของโรงพยาบาลจิตเวช สงขลา เป็นล่ามงานวัฒนธรรมนานาชาติ South Fest Thailand ให้ศิลปินที่มาจัดแสดงงานศิลปะแขนงต่างๆ เป็นล่ามให้กับทีมแพทย์และพยาบาลจากสหรัฐอเมริกาซึ่งมารักษาผู้สูงอายุในท้องถิ่นฟรี เป็นอาสาสมัครดูแลนักท่องเที่ยวตามชายหาด และเป็นไกด์พิพิธภัณฑ์นำชมพิพิธภัณฑ์ทักษิณคดีศึกษา (ซึ่งปีที่แล้วได้รับการโหวตให้เป็น The Popular Voted Museum of Thailand)

 ฉันภูมิใจทุกครั้งที่เห็นนิสิตรู้สึกมีความสุขหลังทำงานอาสาและพวกเขาบอกฉันว่าพวกเขาอยากทำงานอาสาอีก

สิ่งที่ติดตัวฉันมาจากสหรัฐอเมริกา จากการเป็น fulbrighter ฉันว่าคือสิ่งนี้ มันคือความเป็นจิตอาสาที่ฝังรากลึกอยู่ในตัวฉันและฉันอยากปลูกฝังในเยาวชนไทย สำหรับฉัน “ยิ่งให้ ยิ่งได้รับ” เป็นคำกล่าวที่เป็นจริงเสมอมา

Origami & Thank you note

Last Fri. 7 Feb.2020, our Vocab. Skill Development class enjoyed the Origami Workshop tremendously.  I assigned students to divide into a group of 5-6 and learn to fold paper, origami or the Japanese paper folding.  Ori means folding while Gami means paper. Together, it means paper folding.

We studied the passage about Origami and its evolution to advanced technology.  After finished the passage, it's time my neighbor Jeremy, Christina, together with 3 kids visited our class. We had Line dance taught by Christina. Then it's their turn to learn Origami from students. 

The students made 6 paper animals ranging from dachshund, butterfly, dolphin, fox, & etc. Before folding the paper, I told them to keep 1 paper. Write a message first. Then, you can fold it.  
My plan is this would become a thank you note for 1 friend, teacher, parent and those who they care for and are grateful for. 

Afterwards, students were supposed to give the animal to their friend. Post on our FB group to complete the mission.

Tues. 11.02.2020

I've completed this Origami mission, too. I gave paper fish to 2 friends. One is my old friend since a primary school who has been working in BKK for 20 years. After many years, we have met again last Dec. I had a great time climbing up the mount. with him. 

The other person I gave is Aj.Irish, my Filipino co-worker. 

As I didn't learn to fold origami in our last class. I watched a tutorial on Youtube and I think a fish would be very simple enough for me. So I made it while watching it on Youtube. For the 2nd one, I thought I could do it on my own; therefore, I made it from my previous memory. It turned out that the one I gave Aj. Irish was the ice cream cone!

That's why I decided to put 1 candy inside and gave it to her. She laughed when I explained to her that I made an ice cream cone by accident.

Trash Hero Yearly (2020)

'The only cure for littering is YOU'

I'll use this blog to record the times I've attended the 'Trash Hero Songkhla's Beach Cleanup' starting from Jan. 2020. I've been teaching lessons about the environment for many years; therefore, I've tried to implement the idea of being a globally responsible citizen to my students. 

1. Sun.5 Jan. 2020.

 Among 58 trash heroes, 30 Eng.major students, including Sterling, Hanna, Merlin and I have collected 115 kilograms of trashes.

I somehow believe that beach cleanup will raise awareness of tourists who hang out there not to litter and keep our local beach cleaner.

1st NYR: Walking longer distance (DONE)

In my Vocab. Skills Development class on 10 Jan. 2020, our class discussed the Paralympic Game and the song' We are superhuman' which challenges the ability of humans that we all could conquer any obstacles if we have strong determination and passion for it.  I asked 31 students to fill out the sentence starting from Yes, I can ..........   

And later, they were supposed to make it come true by the end of this term, 28 Feb. 2020. Then, 2 extra points will be theirs.  They seemed excited about this idea so we were going to start our new year fresh, huh? 

After the class, Lin, Nat & I have combined our new year resolutions.  Lin wanted to walk from TSU - Songkhla Old Town, while Nat wanted to run 20 km.  To me, I longed to do new activities that I've not done before.  I want to embrace the challenge.  

What should it be then?  

We've decided to walk from TSU - Songkhla Old Town from 8.15 a.m. That's the time we started. We googled and found that the distance would be about 5.6 km.  Don't look far, huh?  We stopped and bought egg tarts, deep-fried banana and sweet potato, water. That's it.  Walking along the beach and under shade made us not too exhausted. We walked slowly, but non-stop.  Better not to sit and rest as I would be lazy if sitting for too long. 

Passing the Sunday market, I bought 1 dress with panda patterns.  It was very lovely so I decided to buy it for 200 B. I'm kind of a panda lover. Now I've got a collection of 2 panda pens, 2 panda key rings and now a dress! So delighted. Thanks, Aj. Leiyu, the kind Chinese lecturer 

Now, I may say I've completed 1 NYR of exploring and doing new activities.

Busy Jan. 2020

ปีใหม่ คิวรัวๆ

1.  เสาร์ 4 ม.ค. 63 : สอบมิดเทอม วิชา Vocabulary Skills Development
ตารางสอบวิชานี้หายไป นิสิต 32 คน ( รวมนิสิตแลกเปลี่ยนอินโดนีเซีย Merlin & Hanna) และเราเลยต้องหาเวลาวันเสาร์ 4 มค.63 มาสอบแทน เราให้นิสิตแต่งตัวได้ตามสบาย จะได้ลุกนั่งสะดวก เรานึกถึงเวลาเรานั่งสอบนานๆ 2-3 ชม. ใส่กระโปรงแล้วขยับไปมาลำบาก กลัวโป๊และไม่เรียบร้อย (เราต้องเปลี่ยนท่านั่งนับสิบท่า กว่าจะทำข้อสอบ 1 วิชาเสร็จ อิๆ)  

ช่วงเที่ยงไปกินข้าวกับจุ๋ม และครอบครัวปั้ง (น้องพุธ + ชี) ที่ร้าน Coffee Peak อยู่จังหวัดเดียวกัน แต่เราไม่ค่อยได้เจอปั้ง เลยมักจะเอาฤกษ์ปีใหม่เจอกัน ปั้งใจดีสอนการเปลี่ยน keyboard ของโทรศัพท์ ให้เป็น Gboard ซึ่งเป็นของ Google เพื่อจะได้ใช้การบันทึกเสียงแทนการพิมพ์ได้ (ล้ำมากฮ่ะ ล้ำมาหลายปีแล้ว แต่เราไม่ได้ลองโหลด app. มาใช้สักที) และเมื่อลองบันทึกเสียงส่งข้อความไปหานิสิต "ครูก็ว่าแบบนั้นแหละ" สิ่งที่ได้ " กูก็ว่าแบบนั้นแหละ" 

เฮ๊ย! กลายเป็นคนหยาบคายไปในบัดดล บ้าแล้ว นี่ถ้าเรา click ส่งเลย จะต้องเสียประวัติคุณครูพูดจาไพเราะที่สุดใน 3 โลก ไปแน่ๆ ;) 

กินข้าวเสร็จ รีบกลับบ้านไปตรวจข้อสอบ กะว่าภายในอาทิตย์ค่ำจะต้องเสร็จ ต้นปีใหม่ทั้งที ต้องขยันๆเอาฤกษ์เอาชัยสักหน่อย 

ใช้เวลาตอนก่อนค่ำ ไปออกเดินด้วยนะ รอบ ม.7 + ม.8 ร่างกายก็ต้องแข็งแรงเหมือนกัน เพราะสมองจะอยู่ได้อย่าง active ในร่างกายที่แข็งแรง 55 ว่าไปนั่น

Buddy Program: Fresh start 5 Jan. 2020

Every time I organize the monthly buddy program, I'd assign Eng. major students to reflect their experiences of the day. How do they feel toward the program and how it develops their Eng. skills and soft skills.  Proudly, most of them gave a positive feedback and some have become a frequent participants. 

Here's the reflection of 3 students that coincidentally, their nicknames started with 'P', Pang, Ping & Ploy and they are from the same major and year.

Happy weekends with international friends: Monthly Buddy Program reflection

( Sun. 5 Jan. 2020)

If you have opportunity, I recommend you to participate in this buddy program organized by the English Club. This is buddy program with 5 international friends from Korea, Italy and Indonesia. I joined buddy program   last Sunday. There were many activities. In the morning, I played games with Thai friends and international friends. These games were so interesting and made us know each other very well.

In the afternoon, I went to do the missions at the Songkhla old town. The missions are about finding the pictures that the group was assigned. After I joined this activity, I know more about cultures of Korean people because my buddy is a Korean lady. We shared a lot of experiences with each other. This is a good memory for me to spend time with friends on weekends.

I joined the buddy program on the 5th January 2020. I met new friends both Thai and Korean, including 2 Indonesian friends. The Korean girl's name is Yewon. We went to Songkhla street art for doing missions by taking photos with the beautiful street arts. We also went to eat ice cream and deep-fried meatballs. Yewon said that the food was so delicious. It was a great experience. She told thank our team for taking her to that place. It was her best day in Thailand, said she. ^^ It was also my memorable experience. I feel glad that she liked it.

Yesterday was the first time that I joined the buddy program. I met 2 lovely Korean and 1 Italian friends including 2 Indonesian friends. I also met new Thai friends from different faculties. There are games for icebreaking and some missions that I really enjoyed. I think some games make us be more focused. After we finished the mission in the Songkhla Old Town, my group walked to see other street arts and then drank some juice in a café with a beautiful lake view.
