มา อยู่อเมริกาเราชอบกินไอติมรส Mint Chocolate Chip มาก มักจะมีติดตู้เย็นไว้เสมอ และลองเปลี่ยนยี่ห้อไปเรื่อยๆ เราไม่ชอบไปนั่งกินตามร้านไอศครีมเนื่องจากมักเสิร์ฟแบบว่าใหญ่ยักษ์มาก กินไม่หมดและต้องฝืนกิน(ด้วยความเสียดายเงิน อิๆ)
จากไอติมอร่อย เมื่อเหมือนถูกบังคับให้กิน ทำให้เข็ดการนั่งกินตามร้านด้วยประการฉะนี้
อืม...ออกแนวเรื่องมากแฮะ ปริมาณมากไม่ชอบ ฮี่ๆ

ได้ฤกษ์ทำไอศครีมหลังจากที่ Talat (ผู้ประสานงาน) ให้เม็ดแมงลัก (basil seed) มาระยะหนึ่ง ตอนแรกคิดว่าจะต้มน้ำหวานใส่เม็ดแมงลัก อิๆเป็นอย่างเดียวที่นึกออกเกี่ยวกับเม็ดแมงลัก

สิ่ง ที่นึกถึงอีกอย่างคือน้ำแข็งใสใส่เม็ดแมงลัก แต่อย่างหลังนี่เครื่องปรุงดูเยอะเกินเหตุ ไม่เหมาะกับการทำง่ายๆอย่างคนต่างแดนที่หาเครื่องปรุงได้ยาก

Talat เอาไอติมกะทิที่ลูกชายทำมาให้หม้อใหญ่ กินแล้วก็นึกถึงรสชาติไอติมไทยใส่ข้าวเหนียว

เอาละ

เราเริ่มค้น google เพื่อหาสูตรไอศครีม เข้าเว็บไทยเพื่อดูการทำ เลือกที่ไม่ยาก อิๆ (ออกแนวงานหนักไม่เอา ของานเบาๆไว้ก่อน)

ดูวิธีการทำแล้วง่ายจัง แค่มี เนยแข็ง น้ำตาล เกลือ ไข่ นม ก็สามารถทำไอติมกินเองได้แล้ว เพื่อให้ดูพลิกแพลงมากขึ้น เราเลยใส่

ผงโอวัลติน (คิดๆเอาว่าน่าจะคล้ายเพิ่มรสชอคโกแลต)

น้ำกะทิ (เพื่อให้ดูเป็นไอติมไทย)

เม็ดแมงลัก (เพิ่มความเป็นไทยให้มากขึ้น ฮ่าๆ จริงๆแล้วเราไม่เคยเห็นไอติมใส่เม็ดแมงลักเป็นส่วนผสม มักจะอยู่ในน้ำแข็งใสซะมากกว่า)

cereal (เพื่อเวลาเคี้ยวจะได้รู้สึกถึงอย่างอื่นด้วย ไม่ใช่เนื้อไอติมอย่างเดียว เราได้ไอเดียมาจาก

ไอติมที่อเมริกาที่มีการเพิ่มโอริโอ คุ๊กกี้ หรือชอคโกแลตชิบ)

walnut (ไอ ติมไทยๆต้องมีถั่ว ขี้เกียจเอาถั่วโรยหน้า เลยใส่ไปด้วยซะเลย ฮ่าๆยังไม่ทิ้งนิสัยเอาง่ายเข้าว่า บอกตัวเองว่าเป็นการใช้ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ในการพลิกแพลง

)

เริ่มด้วยการตอกไข่ 3 ฟอง ด้วยความไม่รู้ ไม่ทันคิดว่าสูตรบอกว่าไข่แดง เราตอกไข่ปุ๊บ ใส่น้ำตาลกับเกลือปั๊บ

โอ๊ะโอ!! ผิดๆ

ต้องรีบช้อนเอาไข่ขาวออก ให้เหลือแต่ไข่แดง

วิธีทำ

1. ตีไข่ขาว น้ำตาล เกลือ เข้าด้วยกัน

2. ตั้งนมให้พออุ่น

3. เอานมใส่ในส่วนผสมข้างต้น ตีให้เข้ากัน

4. ใส่น้ำกะทิ ตีให้เข้ากัน

5. ใส่ส่วนผสมอย่างอื่นที่อยากใส่ เช่น ผงชอคโกแลต ถั่ว เม็ดแมงลัก

6. เอาเข้าช่องแข็งในตู้เย็น

เย้!! ง่ายอะไรเช่นนี้

อิๆ แอบเปิดตู้เย็นทุก 2 ชม.เพื่อดูว่าแข็งรึยัง

อ้าว…ผ่านไป 6 ชม.ก็ยังไม่แข็ง อะไรกันเนี่ย

ไหนลองเอามาชิมดูซิ

อืม…งั้นเปลี่ยนใจจากการตั้งใจทำไอติมเป็น sorbet ซะก็แล้วกัน Yurika น้องเมทบอกว่าลักษณะที่มันไม่จับตัวเป็นไอติมเรียกว่า sorbet คล้ายๆการทำถั่วเขียวแช่เย็นที่มันจับตัวกันจนเป็นน้ำ(แข็ง)ถั่วเขียวน่ะ

อ่ะ ไหนๆก็ไหนๆ ถือว่าทำไอติมไม่สำเร็จ ได้ sorbet มาแทนก็ไม่เป็นไร เราว่ามันอร่อยดี

ให้น้องวัน(เพื่อนลาว)ชิม เค้าบอกว่าหวานไป ส่วนน้องแจ๊ด(น้องคนไทย) เค้าบอกว่าเค็มไป

มีแต่มินจิ (เพื่อนเกาหลีข้างห้อง)ที่บอกว่ามันอร่อยมาก เค้าชอบ

ถือว่าได้ลองทำของใหม่ๆแล้ว ภูมิใจในตัวเอง ฮี่ๆ รู้สึกเหมือนเป็นนักวิทยาศาสตร์น้อยที่ค้นพบสิ่งใหม่ๆ

Meeting the 39th President of America

Once in a Lifetime Experience:

the Conversation with the Former President of America

By late winter and spring, the Humphrey Fellow is supposed to select one from the Humphrey Enhancement Workshops according to his/her main interest ranging from Disaster Planning, Digital Media, Peace Building Through Restorative Dialogue, Sustainability, Natural Resources and Human Security, and Global Development and Social Justice.

I decided to choose the last one with two reasons in my mind. The first one is I would like to learn about the current issues around the world from other fellows and American scholars’ perspective that will lead me to be more responsible global citizen. The other one is secretly I would like to meet the Former President Jimmy Carter, who will be the honored guest speaker of the workshop this year.

Probably other fellows also dream to meet him as well. It turned out that this workshop which was organized by the Emory University was ranked having the biggest numbers of participants. Normally, each workshop includes only 30-40 participants, but surprisingly 60 for this workshop from 18-23 March 2012!

We Humphries got opportunities to visit CNN, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center and the Carter Center Library and Museum. This helped us gain background knowledge about social justice in America and learned how the 39^th President Jimmy Carter had contributed nationally and internationally.

Interestingly, from the exhibitions in the Carter Center, he started his oil painting when he was seventies. Incredibly, his paintings looked very professional. He inspired me to learn arts. Never late to start a hobby one desires.

Although he is currently 88 years old, he is very active and has great sense of humor. Within one hour, we were allowed to ask short questions so that other fellows would get a chance to ask as well.

One fellow asked “What were the criteria to be the President of America and why did you decide to be in this position”. He jokingly replied that the criteria were very simple, just being American citizen and 35 years old. (Umm....sounds easy, huh)

He added that he did not dream of being the President at his early age. Instead, he dreamt of working in a navy for 30 years, and then spent his retirement year in Hawaii. Therefore, he ran for the President election at 50 which was quite old to him.

Lastly, he ended his remark that we Humphrey should keep in mind that we have been blessed so when we return home, we should share our blessing to those in need in our home countries.

I will surely remember his talk and be inspired to be the person who makes a positive difference to the society.
